I versetti che lo precedono (9:1-4) menzionano che i trattati con gli idolatri che avevano mantenuto la parola data devono essere rispettati fino alla scadenza, e il versetto stesso riguarda coloro che violarono il trattato. Il versetto 9:6, subito dopo, ordina: se qualcuno di loro chiede protezione, dagliela e portalo in un luogo sicuro. I versetti 9:7 e 9:13 ne danno la ragione: ruppero i loro giuramenti e furono i primi ad attaccare.
Studiosi classici come Ibn Kathir e al-Tabari lo leggono nel suo contesto, e molti moderni sottolineano lo stesso punto. Preso da solo, qualsiasi testo può essere usato in modo improprio, e chi lo cita per sostenere che l'Islam comanda di uccidere i non musulmani ignora il suo contesto e versetti come 2:256, 60:8 e 109:6.
And when the sacred months have passed, then kill the polytheists wherever you find them and capture them and besiege them and sit in wait for them at every place of ambush. And if any one of the polytheists seeks your protection, then grant him protection so that he may hear the words of Allah. Then deliver him to his place of safety. Allah does not forbid you from those who do not fight you because of religion and do not expel you from your homes - from being righteous toward them and acting justly toward them. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.
