La parola Islam ha la stessa radice di salam, pace. Il Corano insegna che uccidere ingiustamente una persona è come uccidere tutta l'umanità, e salvare una vita è come salvare tutta l'umanità. Dice ai musulmani di inclinare alla pace quando lo fa l'altra parte, e di ripagare il male con il bene.
I musulmani fanno anche notare che la storia mostra sia la pace sia la guerra, come in ogni civiltà. Ciò che una religione insegna dovrebbe essere giudicato dai suoi testi e dai suoi studiosi maggioritari, non dal comportamento di gruppi come l'ISIS e al-Qaeda, che gli studiosi musulmani in tutto il mondo hanno denunciato e le cui vittime sono per lo più musulmane.
