What does Islam say about Mary, the mother of Jesus?

Short answer

Mary (Maryam) is the most honoured woman in the Quran and the only woman named in it. The Quran calls her chosen above the women of all the worlds, pure and truthful, and gives her story at length.

The fuller answer

Chapter 19 of the Quran is named Maryam. It tells how the angel gave her the news of a child by God's command, though no man had touched her, and how she bore him and was defended by his words as a baby in the cradle. Muslims believe in the virgin birth of Jesus.

The Quran holds her up as a model for all believers, men and women. She is described as devout, steadfast and one who confirmed the words of her Lord. Many Muslim girls are named Maryam, and Muslims never speak ill of her.

From the Quran
