Is Allah the same God that Christians and Jews worship?

Short answer

Muslims believe there is only one God, so the God of Abraham, Moses and Jesus is the same God that Muslims call Allah. Muslims, Christians and Jews differ in how they describe Him, not in whether He is one Creator.

The fuller answer

Allah is simply the Arabic word for God. Arabic Bibles use 'Allah' for God, and Arab Christians and Jews say Allah in their prayers. The word is related to the Hebrew Eloah and the Aramaic Alaha, the language that Jesus spoke.

Where Islam differs is in its description of God: He is One without any partner, He has no son and is not three persons, and He does not become a human. Muslims worship the God that Abraham, Moses and Jesus called on and believe that these prophets taught only His oneness.

From the Quran

And do not argue with the People of the Scripture except in a way that is best, except for those who commit injustice among them, and say, "We believe in that which has been revealed to us and revealed to you. And our God and your God is one; and we are Muslims [in submission] to Him."

Say, "O People of the Scripture, come to a word that is equitable between us and you - that we will not worship except Allah and not associate anything with Him and not take one another as lords instead of Allah." But if they turn away, then say, "Bear witness that we are Muslims [submitting to Him]."
