About Ramadan
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Hijri calendar, in which Muslims fast from dawn (Fajr) to sunset (Maghrib). It is also the month in which the Quran began to be revealed. Fasting in Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam.
Ramadan begins when the new moon is sighted. Countries differ: some rely on local sighting and some on calculation, so the first day can differ by a day from place to place. The dates here follow the Umm al-Qura calendar.
