About Ashura
Ashura is the tenth day of Muharram. For many Muslims it is a day of fasting: the Prophet ﷺ fasted on it and encouraged fasting it, and it is recommended to fast the day before or the day after as well.
For Shia Muslims, Ashura is also a day of mourning for Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of the Prophet ﷺ, who was martyred at Karbala.
