It counts from the Hijra of the Prophet ﷺ to Madinah. The companions adopted it as the Islamic calendar in the time of 'Umar ibn al-Khattab.
How many months are in the Hijri year?
Twelve lunar months, about 354 days, so Islamic dates move 10 or 11 days earlier each Gregorian year. Four months are sacred: Dhul-Qa'dah, Dhul-Hijjah, Muharram and Rajab (Quran 9:36).
How was the Quran collected?
It was written down during the Prophet's ﷺ lifetime, gathered in one volume under Abu Bakr and copied into standard mushafs under 'Uthman, may Allah be pleased with them.
