General14
Are the Muslim Flow tools free?
Yes. Every tool on this website is free to use, with no account and no ads.
How are the prayer times calculated?
Times come from the AlAdhan service. Each city uses the calculation method of its country or region, for example JAKIM in Malaysia, Umm al-Qura in Makkah and the Egyptian General Authority of Survey in Egypt.
Is my data stored anywhere?
No. Settings and counters are saved only in your own browser. We do not ask you to sign in.
Is there a mobile app?
Yes. Muslim Flow for Android is coming soon to Google Play and adds the adhan, offline Quran and a Qibla compass.
The adhan does not sound on time.
On Android 14 and newer, open Settings, Apps, Muslim Flow, Alarms & reminders, and allow it. Also keep notifications on, and set battery use for the app to Unrestricted if your phone stops it in the background.
Prayer times look wrong.
Pull down on the Prayer tab to refresh your location. Check that your phone's date, time and time zone are set automatically.
A surah says it is not available offline.
Open the surah, choose Listen, and tap the download button. When the check mark and “Available offline” appear, it is saved.
The Qibla compass is not steady.
Move your phone in a figure 8 to calibrate it, and keep it away from magnets, cases with magnets and metal.
How do I change the language or theme?
Open More, then Settings. Choose Appearance for dark or light, and App language for the language.
Is Muslim Flow free to use?
Yes. The website is free, with no sign-up and no ads. You can read the Quran, check prayer times, find the Qibla and use the other tools without creating an account.
Do you store my location or my data?
No. Your location is used in your browser only, to ask the prayer-times and Qibla services for your times. Your choices, such as your city, language and counter, are saved in your own browser and not on our servers.
Does the website work without internet?
The pages and tools need an internet connection, because prayer times, search and audio are loaded when you use them. After a page has loaded, your saved settings stay in your browser.
Which languages are available?
There are 18 languages: English, Arabic, Malay, Indonesian, Turkish, Urdu, French, Spanish, German, Portuguese, Russian, Bengali, Hindi, Persian, Chinese, Swahili, Hausa and Uzbek. Use the language button at the top. Some newer sections, such as Fiqh and Halal & Haram, are in English and Arabic for now.
How can I contact you or report a mistake?
Use the WhatsApp button on any page, or write by email from the Support page. Please tell us the page and what is wrong, and we will correct it.
Prayer times11
Which calculation method should I choose?
Leave it on Automatic to use the method normally followed in your country or city. Choose another only if your local mosque follows a different one.
What is the difference between the Asr options?
Standard (the majority view) starts Asr when an object's shadow equals its height. The Hanafi view starts it when the shadow is twice its height, so Asr is later.
What does Imsak mean?
Imsak is a short time before Fajr, when people who are fasting stop eating as a precaution.
Can I get the adhan on my phone?
The Muslim Flow app can play the adhan and remind you before each prayer. This website shows times only.
Why do prayer times differ between apps and websites?
Prayer times are worked out from the position of the sun, but authorities choose different angles for Fajr and Isha (for example 18° or 15°), different Asr rules, and sometimes add a few minutes of caution. A mosque may also round the times. Choose the method of your local authority, and follow your mosque if it differs.
How do I get the prayer times for any city?
Use the “Search any city” box on this page, type the name and pick your place. The page then uses the exact coordinates, the calculation method normally used in that country and the time zone of that place.
Do prayer times change with daylight saving time?
The sun does not change, but the clocks do. This page shows the time on the clock of the place you selected, so it follows daylight saving automatically. A timetable printed before the change can be an hour off.
How accurate are the times?
The times are calculated to about a minute for the chosen method. Many authorities add a safety margin of one to three minutes, especially for Fajr and for sunset. If you want that margin, wait a few minutes after the listed time.
Can I pray at sunrise, midday or sunset?
The Prophet ﷺ forbade praying voluntary prayers at the moment of sunrise, at the exact midday when the sun is at its highest, and at sunset (Sahih Muslim). These are short moments. Sunrise ends the time of Fajr, so Fajr must be prayed before it. Scholars discuss exceptions for missed obligatory prayers.
How are prayer times found far in the north or south?
In high-latitude places the twilight may not end in summer, so Fajr or Isha cannot be seen. Authorities use rules such as the middle of the night, one-seventh of the night or an angle-based rule. This page applies an angle-based adjustment above 48° of latitude. Follow your local mosque or council.
Which times should I use while travelling?
Use the times of the place where you are. If you cross time zones or move to another city, search for your new city. A traveller may shorten and combine prayers; see the Fiqh page on the prayer of a traveller.
Qibla finder10
How do I find the Qibla direction?
Use the finder above: allow your location or choose a city, then turn until the Kaaba symbol lines up with the marker. The angle shown is measured clockwise from true north.
Is the Qibla always the shortest path to Mecca?
Yes. The usual method is the shortest great-circle path from your location to the Kaaba, which is what this tool calculates.
Why does my compass point a few degrees differently?
Phone compasses use magnetic north. The difference from true north (magnetic declination) depends on where you are, and metal or magnets nearby can also affect the reading.
Does it work without internet?
The calculation happens in your browser, so once the page has loaded it works without a connection. Your location never leaves your device.
Is my location stored?
No. It is used only in your browser to work out the angle. We do not send it to a server.
Why does the Qibla not point straight east or west?
The Qibla is the shortest path over the curved Earth (a great circle) to the Kaaba, and on a flat map this path looks curved. From Southeast Asia it points north-west, from North America north-east and from Europe south-east.
Is the phone compass reliable inside a building?
Metal, magnets, speakers and electronics bend a compass. Move away from them, hold the phone flat and calibrate it by moving it in a figure-eight. If the needle keeps jumping, use the degrees shown on this page with a trusted compass.
What if I cannot know the direction, for example on a plane?
Pray towards your best judgement of the Qibla after making a sincere effort to find it. Most scholars say that if you did your best and later learn that you were a little off, your prayer is valid.
Does the Qibla direction change during the year?
No. The direction is fixed for each place. Only the way it is measured can differ slightly; this page gives the bearing from true north.
How can I find the Qibla with the sun?
Twice a year, around 27–28 May and 15–16 July, the sun is directly above the Kaaba at about midday in Makkah (roughly 09:18 and 09:27 UTC). At that moment the shadow of an upright object points directly away from the Qibla.
Islamic calendar10
What is today's Hijri date?
It is shown at the top of this page and updates every day. The Hijri date changes at sunset, but this calendar changes it at midnight like a normal date.
Why does the date differ from my local announcement?
This calendar follows Umm al-Qura. Many countries start a month only after sighting the new moon locally, which can differ by a day. Use the adjust buttons to shift the date.
How many months and days are in the Hijri year?
There are 12 months of 29 or 30 days, about 354 days in a year.
Is the Hijri calendar the same as the Gregorian calendar?
No. The Hijri calendar follows the moon and moves about 11 days earlier each Gregorian year, so Ramadan and Eid fall in different seasons over time.
What is the difference between Umm al-Qura and moon sighting?
Umm al-Qura is a fixed astronomical calculation used in Saudi Arabia for civil dates. Moon sighting starts a month when the new crescent is seen, so countries can differ by a day. Use the adjustment control to match your local announcement.
How do I convert a Gregorian date to Hijri?
Open “Date converter”, type the day, month and year in the Gregorian boxes, and the Hijri date appears at once. You can do the reverse in the Hijri boxes. It works for the years 1883 to 2174 (1300 to 1600 AH).
What are the Islamic months in order?
Muharram, Safar, Rabi' al-Awwal, Rabi' al-Thani, Jumada al-Awwal, Jumada al-Thani, Rajab, Sha'ban, Ramadan, Shawwal, Dhul-Qa'dah and Dhul-Hijjah.
Which months are the sacred months?
Four months: Dhul-Qa'dah, Dhul-Hijjah, Muharram and Rajab. Allah mentions them in the Quran (9:36). Wrongdoing is especially forbidden in them, and good deeds are especially rewarded.
When do Ramadan and Eid fall this year?
See “Upcoming occasions” on this page. It lists the next dates, such as Ramadan, Laylat al-Qadr, Eid al-Fitr, the day of Arafah and Eid al-Adha, with the days left. They follow Umm al-Qura and can move by a day with local moon sighting.
Why does the Hijri date change in the evening in tradition?
In Islamic tradition the day begins at sunset, with the Maghrib prayer. Many people therefore count the new date from the evening. This calendar changes the date at midnight, like an ordinary date, to keep it simple.
Quran12
How many surahs and verses are in the Quran?
The Quran has 114 surahs and 6,236 verses, according to the most common count.
Which translation is used?
The English translation is Sahih International. The Arabic text is in the Uthmani script.
Which reciters can I listen to?
19 reciters, including Mishary Alafasy, Maher Al-Muaiqly, Saad Al-Ghamdi, Mahmoud Khalil Al-Husary, Abdul Basit Abdus-Samad, Abdur-Rahman As-Sudais, Hani Ar-Rifai and Mohamed Al-Minshawi.
Can I listen without reading?
Yes. Open a surah and press Play. Audio streams from the internet, so you need a connection. The Muslim Flow app also lets you download surahs for offline listening.
Is my reading position saved?
Yes, in your own browser. Use the Continue card on this page to return to where you stopped.
How many surahs, verses and juz are in the Quran?
There are 114 surahs and 30 juz'. In the Hafs count, which is the most widespread, the Quran has 6,236 verses, counting the Basmalah as the first verse of Al-Fatihah.
Which Arabic text and translation are used?
The Arabic text is the Uthmani script in the recitation of Hafs from 'Asim. The English translation is Sahih International, and each other language uses the translation named under the verses of its pages.
How do I search for a verse or a surah?
Use the search box on the Quran page. Type a surah name or number, a reference such as 2:255, or any word from a verse, in Arabic or in the language of the page. Each result opens at that verse.
Can I listen to one verse at a time?
Yes. Press the play icon next to any verse, and the next verses follow with no gap. You can choose among 19 reciters, change the speed and repeat a verse. When a surah ends, the next surah starts.
What is the difference between Meccan and Medinan surahs?
Meccan surahs were revealed before the Hijra and focus on faith, the Hereafter and the stories of earlier prophets. Medinan surahs were revealed after it and include many rulings for the community. Each surah page shows its type.
What is a verse of prostration (sajdah)?
It is a verse after which the reader or listener makes a prostration of recitation (sujud al-tilawah). Scholars count fourteen or fifteen of them. The surah pages mark these verses.
Do I need wudu to read the Quran on a phone?
Scholars differ. Many say the rule of touching the mushaf with wudu applies to the printed copy, and allow reading from a screen without wudu. Others advise wudu out of respect. Being in wudu is better in every case.
Hadith library10
What is the difference between sahih, hasan and daif?
Sahih means authentic: its chain is connected through reliable narrators with strong memory, without hidden defect. Hasan means good: it is like sahih but one narrator's memory is somewhat lighter. Daif means weak: it fails one of these conditions.
Are all hadith in Bukhari and Muslim authentic?
Scholars of the community accepted the contents of Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim as sound, apart from a few narrations that some scholars discussed. That is why this library does not list a grade for each hadith in these two books.
Are all the hadith in the Sunan books weak?
No. The four Sunan books contain many sahih and hasan hadith and also some weak ones. Open a book and use the grade filter to see the weak ones.
Why do two scholars give different grades?
They may judge a narrator differently, find other chains that strengthen a hadith, or set different conditions. This is normal, and this library shows each grade with the scholar's name.
Can I use a weak hadith?
Scholars differ. A hadith that is fabricated (mawdu) may never be attributed to the Prophet ﷺ. For others, some scholars allow citing a weak hadith only for encouragement to good deeds, with conditions, and others do not allow it at all. Ask a scholar.
What is the difference between sahih, hasan and da'if?
A sahih hadith has a connected chain of upright and precise narrators and no hidden defect. A hasan hadith is like it, but its narrators are slightly less precise. A da'if (weak) hadith misses one of these conditions. Scholars may differ on the grade of a particular hadith.
Why does a hadith show several grades?
Different scholars, such as al-Albani, Shuaib al-Arna'ut or Zubair Ali Zai, may reach different conclusions on the same hadith. All the grades from the database are shown, so that you can see where scholars agree or differ.
Why is only the Arabic text shown?
Translations belong to their translators and publishers, so this library publishes the classical Arabic text and gives a link to sunnah.com, where you can read the translation of each hadith.
How many hadith are in the library?
The library holds 36,064 hadith in nine books: the six books, the Muwatta of Malik, the Forty Hadith of an-Nawawi and the Forty Hadith Qudsi. Narrations are counted one by one, so repeated narrations are counted each time.
How do I cite a hadith?
Write the book and the number, for example “Sahih al-Bukhari 1” or “Sahih Muslim 1599”. Each hadith card has a link to its page on sunnah.com and a button that copies a link to it.
Fiqh9
What is fiqh?
Fiqh is the knowledge of the practical rulings of Islam, taken from their detailed evidence in the Quran and the Sunnah: how to pray, fast, give zakat, marry, trade and more.
Which school of fiqh should I follow?
The four Sunni schools are all accepted. Most Muslims follow the school common in their country, and ask a scholar who teaches it. If you travel or move, you can follow a reliable scholar of another school. Avoid picking the easiest opinion each time without a reason.
Why do the schools differ?
They differ in how they understand some verses and hadith, in the authenticity they give to some reports, and in how they combine different evidence. Most differences are in details, and all four schools agree on the main pillars of the religion.
Are these pages a fatwa?
No. They explain well-known rulings with their evidence for general learning. A fatwa is an answer to a specific person's situation by a qualified scholar.
How do I know a hadith is authentic?
Hadith in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim are accepted by the scholars. For other books, the grade given by named scholars (sahih, hasan or daif) is shown next to the hadith. If scholars grade it differently, all grades are shown.
What are the four schools of fiqh?
They are the Hanafi school (after Abu Hanifa), the Maliki school (after Malik ibn Anas), the Shafi'i school (after al-Shafi'i) and the Hanbali school (after Ahmad ibn Hanbal). They agree on the foundations of the religion and differ on some details.
Must I follow one school?
Scholars differ. Many say that an ordinary person should ask a qualified scholar, as Allah says: ask the people of knowledge if you do not know (16:43). Many advise staying with one school for consistency, and do not advise picking the easiest opinion each time.
What do fard, wajib, sunnah, makruh and haram mean?
These are the levels of a ruling. Fard (obligatory) and haram (forbidden) are required to do or to leave. Sunnah (recommended) is rewarded if done, and makruh (disliked) is better left. Mubah (permitted) is neither. The Hanafi school separates fard from wajib.
What are the sources of fiqh?
The first sources are the Quran and the Sunnah. Then the consensus of the scholars (ijma') and analogy (qiyas). The schools use other tools in different ways, such as customs and public interest.
Halal & Haram7
What does halal mean?
Halal means permitted by Islamic law. It is used for food, drink, earnings, behaviour and more.
What does haram mean?
Haram means forbidden by Islamic law. Doing it is a sin, and avoiding it for Allah's sake is rewarded.
What if I am unsure whether something is halal?
The Prophet ﷺ advised keeping away from doubtful matters. Ask a knowledgeable scholar, and check for a trusted halal certification when it is a product.
Can something haram become allowed?
Only in real necessity, for example to save life when nothing else is available, and only as much as needed (Quran 2:173).
What is the basic rule of halal and haram?
The default for things (food, clothes, trade and tools) is that they are permitted unless there is evidence that they are forbidden. Allah says that He created for you all that is on the earth (2:29). The prohibitions are specific and limited, and the evidence for each is shown on its page.
How can I check if packaged food is halal?
Read the list of ingredients for pork, alcohol, gelatin and animal-based items, and look at the E-numbers in the ingredient list on the Halal & Haram page. Look for a trusted halal certification mark, or ask the maker. If it stays unclear, leave it, as the Prophet ﷺ taught.
What should I do when scholars differ on a ruling?
Where scholars differ, the page states the difference. You follow a qualified scholar or the opinion of your school, and being careful is better when a matter is doubtful. Ask a scholar you trust about your own situation.
Stories of the Prophets7
How many prophets are named in the Quran?
Twenty-five: Adam, Idris, Nuh, Hud, Salih, Ibrahim, Lut, Ismail, Ishaq, Yaqub, Yusuf, Ayyub, Shuayb, Musa, Harun, Dhul-Kifl, Dawud, Sulayman, Ilyas, Alyasa, Yunus, Zakariyya, Yahya, Isa and Muhammad.
Were there more prophets than these?
Yes. The Quran says Allah sent messengers whose stories He told the Prophet ﷺ and others whose stories He did not tell (4:164).
Which prophet is mentioned most in the Quran?
Musa (Moses) is the prophet whose story the Quran tells most often, in many surahs.
Which story is told in a single surah?
The story of Yusuf is told from beginning to end in Surah Yusuf (12), which the Quran calls the best of stories.
Who was the last prophet?
The Quran says that Muhammad ﷺ is the Messenger of Allah and the seal of the prophets (33:40).
Why are the stories told only from the Quran?
The Quran is preserved word for word and is the surest source. The stories here use only its verses, with no reports from other books, so that what you read can be checked against the verses shown.
What are Isra'iliyyat?
They are reports about earlier prophets taken from the traditions of earlier peoples. Scholars accept what agrees with the Quran and the authentic Sunnah, reject what contradicts them, and remain silent about the rest.
Names of Allah7
How many Names of Allah are there?
A well-known hadith says Allah has ninety-nine names, and the usual list is the one narrated in Jami' at-Tirmidhi. Scholars note that Allah is also described by other names and attributes in the Quran and the Sunnah.
What are the Names of Allah called in Arabic?
They are called Asma' Allah al-Husna, “the most beautiful names of Allah”.
How can I memorise the 99 Names?
Read a few names a day with their meanings, mark the ones you know, then practise with the flashcards and the quiz on this page.
Is my progress saved?
Yes, in your own browser. Nothing is sent to a server.
Is there a hadith about the 99 Names of Allah?
Yes. The Prophet ﷺ said that Allah has ninety-nine names, and whoever counts them will enter Paradise (Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim). The hadith does not give the list. The list used in this site is the one most widely known, taken from the Quran and the Sunnah.
Do the 99 Names mean that Allah has only 99 names?
No. Scholars explain that the hadith speaks of these ninety-nine as the names whoever counts them will be rewarded, and not that Allah has no others. Different scholars list slightly different names.
How can I learn the 99 Names?
Use the flashcards and the quiz on the Names page. Learn a few names a day, read their meaning and the Quran verses where they appear, and mark the ones you have learned to see your progress.
Adhkar7
Where do these adhkar come from?
They come from Hisn al-Muslim by Sa'id bin Ali bin Wahf al-Qahtani, which collects adhkar and duas from the Quran and the authentic Sunnah.
When are the morning adhkar said?
Commonly from after Fajr until sunrise or the early part of the day. The evening adhkar are commonly said after Asr until Maghrib or the early evening.
Does the counter save my progress?
Yes, for the current day, in your own browser. It resets automatically the next day. Nothing is sent to a server.
Can I use these offline?
Once a page has loaded it stays usable, but for the best experience the Muslim Flow app has adhkar built in with counters you can keep.
When are the morning and evening adhkar read?
The morning adhkar are read from Fajr until sunrise, and scholars allow them until midday. The evening adhkar are read after Asr until sunset, and scholars allow them until the middle of the night.
Do I need wudu to say adhkar?
No. Remembrance of Allah is allowed in every state. Being in wudu and facing the Qibla is better, but it is not a condition.
Can I say the adhkar in my own language?
The adhkar are said in their Arabic words as they were reported. You can read the meaning in your language to understand them, and make your own dua in any language.
Tasbeeh counter7
Is my count saved?
Yes. The count for each dhikr is saved in your browser, so it is still there when you come back. Nothing is sent to a server.
Can I count without a target?
Yes. Choose Free count and the counter simply keeps going.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes. It works in any modern phone or computer browser, and the button is large enough to tap comfortably.
Is there a tasbeeh in the Muslim Flow app?
Yes. The app has a digital tasbeeh with sound, vibration and counters of your own.
What is the usual count of tasbeeh after prayer?
A well-known sunnah after each obligatory prayer is to say SubhanAllah 33 times, Alhamdulillah 33 times and Allahu Akbar 34 times, as reported in Sahih Muslim.
Is a counter allowed instead of the fingers?
Counting on the fingers of the right hand is the practice reported from the Prophet ﷺ. Scholars generally allow beads or a counter if it helps a person to keep count and to focus on the remembrance.
Does the counter remember my count?
Yes. Your count and your chosen dhikr are saved in your own browser, so they are still there when you come back on the same device.
No question matches your search.
