The Quran and the Prophet

How do Muslims know Muhammad ﷺ was a true prophet?

Short answer

Muslims point to the Quran itself, to his character and honesty before and after his mission, to what he gained and gave up in the process, and to the fact that his message was the same call to one God that every earlier prophet brought.

The fuller answer

He could neither read nor write, yet he brought a book that Arab poets, who were masters of the language, could not match when challenged to produce even a single chapter like it. His own people called him the Trustworthy before the revelation. He did not seek wealth or rank: he lived simply, mended his own clothes, and when he died he left almost nothing.

Those closest to him, his wife, his cousin and his friend Abu Bakr, were the first to believe, and they knew him better than anyone. His followers endured years of persecution for the sake of his message. Muslims also see the miracle in how quickly a small group of people from a divided desert land was transformed through his teaching.

From the Quran

And if you are in doubt about what We have sent down upon Our Servant [Muhammad], then produce a surah the like thereof and call upon your witnesses other than Allah, if you should be truthful.

Say, "If mankind and the jinn gathered in order to produce the like of this Qur'an, they could not produce the like of it, even if they were to each other assistants."

And you did not recite before it any scripture, nor did you inscribe one with your right hand. Otherwise the falsifiers would have had [cause for] doubt.
