Living and working with Muslims
Why do some Muslims not shake hands with the opposite sex?
Short answer
Some Muslims avoid physical touch between men and women who are not close relatives, as a matter of modesty and a ruling on which scholars differ. It is not meant as an insult, and many Muslims do shake hands in work settings.
The fuller answer
Those who avoid it rely on a hadith in which the Prophet ﷺ said that he does not shake hands with women, and on the principle of keeping boundaries. Others say that a handshake in a normal social setting is allowed, and a few of them think it is better to avoid it. It depends on the person's school and conviction.
If you are not sure, wait to see if the other person offers a hand, or greet with a smile and a nod. If you are the one who is declining, a polite and warm explanation, such as 'I do not shake hands, out of my faith, but it is a pleasure to meet you', usually works.
