Women, family and marriage

Can Muslims date before marriage?

Short answer

Most Muslims do not date in the Western sense, because Islam does not allow physical relations outside marriage, nor being alone together in private. They do meet, talk and get to know each other with family involvement and a view to marriage.

The fuller answer

A couple may meet in a public place, with family or friends around, and ask the questions that matter: values, goals and character. The Prophet ﷺ advised looking at the person one is going to marry. Some Muslims accept a longer period of engagement and conversation and others a shorter one.

The Quran tells believers not to approach unlawful sex, and tells both men and women to be modest. Muslims differ in how strict they are about what counts as being alone together, depending on their culture and understanding, and young Muslims in the West often debate it.

From the Quran

And do not approach unlawful sexual intercourse. Indeed, it is ever an immorality and is evil as a way.

Tell the believing men to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts. That is purer for them. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what they do. And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof and to wrap [a portion of] their headcovers over their chests and not expose their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands' fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers, their brothers' sons, their sisters' sons, their women, that which their right hands possess, or those male attendants having no physical desire, or children who are not yet aware of the private aspects of women. And let them not stamp their feet to make known what they conceal of their adornment. And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed.
