Prayer, fasting, Hajj and worship

What should I wear and do when I visit a mosque?

Short answer

Dress modestly, remove your shoes at the entrance, speak quietly and follow the guidance of the people there. Women are usually asked to cover their hair with a scarf, and shorts and sleeveless tops are not suitable for anyone.

The fuller answer

Wash and wear clean socks if you can, since you will walk on carpets where people pray. Phones should be on silent. Do not eat in the prayer hall. Do not step in front of someone praying. Shaking hands is up to the person: many Muslims shake hands, and some do not shake hands with the opposite sex. A friendly greeting is always fine.

If you would like to see a prayer, you can sit at the back of the hall. You do not need to join in. Asking sincere questions is welcome, and most Muslims enjoy the chance to explain their faith.
