Maymunah bint al-Harith belonged to the Banu Hilal ibn Amir. She was the sister of Umm al-Fadl, the wife of the Prophet's uncle al-Abbas, and she was therefore the maternal aunt of Abdullah ibn Abbas, who calls her 'my aunt Maymunah' (Sahih al-Bukhari 117). The sirah books record that she married the Prophet ﷺ in 7 AH, at the time of the Umrah of Qada'.

The reports differ on whether he married her while in the state of ihram. Ibn Abbas said that he married Maymunah while in ihram and that the marriage was consummated after he had left it (Sahih al-Bukhari 4258), while Maymunah herself said that he married her when he was not in ihram (Sahih Muslim 1411). Many scholars prefer her own account, as she knew her marriage best.

Ibn Abbas spent a night in the house of his aunt Maymunah, on the night the Prophet ﷺ was with her, and saw how he prayed at night. When Ibn Abbas stood on his left, the Prophet ﷺ moved him to his right. The Muslims learned the details of the Prophet's night prayer from this account (Sahih al-Bukhari 117).

According to most scholars she was the last woman the Prophet ﷺ married. She died at Sarif, near Makkah (Sahih al-Bukhari 4258), which the sirah books give as the very place where the marriage had been consummated. Reports differ on the year of her death, the most commonly given being around 51 AH.
