Il Corano invita ripetutamente le persone a guardare l'alternarsi di notte e giorno, la pioggia che ravviva la terra morta, la creazione dell'essere umano e le stelle, come segni per coloro che riflettono. Non chiede una fede cieca: chiede riflessione. I filosofi musulmani svilupparono argomenti come quello dell'inizio dell'universo e quello della contingenza, che in seguito influenzarono i pensatori europei.
I musulmani dicono anche che Dio si conosce attraverso l'esperienza: tramite la preghiera, il sollievo dopo una difficoltà e la pace che viene dal ricordarLo. Le prove sono di diversi tipi e possono non soddisfare chi ha già deciso in anticipo. I musulmani invitano chi cerca con onestà a porre le domande, a leggere il Corano e a chiedere sinceramente guida a Dio.
Or were they created by nothing, or were they the creators [of themselves]? Or did they create the heavens and the earth? Rather, they are not certain.
So direct your face toward the religion, inclining to truth. [Adhere to] the fitrah of Allah upon which He has created [all] people. No change should there be in the creation of Allah. That is the correct religion, but most of the people do not know.
Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and earth, and the alternation of the night and the day, and the [great] ships which sail through the sea with that which benefits people, and what Allah has sent down from the heavens of rain, giving life thereby to the earth after its lifelessness and dispersing therein every [kind of] moving creature, and [His] directing of the winds and the clouds controlled between the heaven and the earth are signs for a people who use reason.
