Haram Speech & character

Is spying on others and thinking badly of them haram?

Short answer

Yes. The Quran tells believers to avoid much suspicion because some suspicion is sinful, and not to spy on one another (49:12). Searching for people's faults and secrets is forbidden.

Evidence

Quran

O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Accepting of repentance and Merciful.

This is general information, not a fatwa. For your own situation, ask a qualified scholar.
