Scholars differ Speech & character

Is music haram?

Short answer

Scholars differ. Most classical scholars held that musical instruments are forbidden, relying on the verse about idle talk that misleads from Allah's path (31:6) and on hadith they understood to forbid them. Others, such as Ibn Hazm, permitted singing and music that contain nothing forbidden. All agree that anything with obscene words or a call to sin is forbidden, and that the daff at weddings and Eid is allowed. To be safe, leave what is doubtful and ask a scholar you trust.

Evidence

Quran

And of the people is he who buys the amusement of speech to mislead [others] from the way of Allah without knowledge and who takes it in ridicule. Those will have a humiliating punishment.

This is general information, not a fatwa. For your own situation, ask a qualified scholar.
