Is music or art forbidden in Islam?

Short answer

Islam has a rich tradition of art: calligraphy, geometric design, architecture and poetry. On music, scholars differ: some forbid musical instruments, many allow music that is not immoral, and nearly all allow singing without instruments, such as the Quran recited beautifully and nasheeds.

The fuller answer

Muslim scholars who forbid instruments rely on a hadith in Bukhari that speaks of people who will make lawful 'al-hir' and instruments, and others say it is not clear, or a matter of what the music accompanies. All agree that music which leads to immorality or neglect of duty is wrong. The Prophet ﷺ allowed the daff (hand drum) on weddings and on Eid.

On drawings of living beings, there are strong warnings against making images that are worshipped or to rival God's creation, and scholars differ about photography and drawing. Most allow photography and decorative drawings. Islam encourages beauty in general, as the Prophet ﷺ said that God is beautiful and loves beauty.
