The shahadah
The shahadah says that there is no god but Allah, and that Muhammad ﷺ is the messenger of Allah. In Arabic it begins with the words ash-hadu an la ilaha illa Allah.
What matters most is that you understand it and believe it in your heart. You can say it alone, in your own place, at any time. Many people like to say it in front of Muslims at a mosque so that others can welcome and help them, but this is not a condition.
Islam welcomes everyone, and the past is forgiven for the one who accepts it sincerely. You do not need to be perfect to begin.
Ghusl, the full bath
It is recommended to take a ghusl (full ritual bath) after saying the shahadah. Authentic reports show that the Prophet ﷺ told new Muslims to wash. Scholars differ on how strongly this is required, so if you are unsure, ask a qualified scholar.
Ghusl is simple. You make the intention, wash your whole body with clean water, and begin with wudu (ablution) if you wish.
Your first steps
You do not need to learn everything in one week. Choose a few small goals and keep them steady.
Start with the prayer, because it is the most regular act of worship. You can make dua in your own language while you learn the Arabic words.
- Learn the five daily prayers and how to make wudu.
- Memorize a few short surahs, such as Surah al-Fatihah and Surah al-Ikhlas.
- Learn the main things that are forbidden and the many things that are allowed.
- Find a mosque or a Muslim community where you feel welcome.
- Read a trusted translation of the Quran and the life of the Prophet ﷺ.
- Ask questions of knowledgeable people without feeling shy.
Be patient with yourself
Allah does not give anyone more than they can bear. Quran 2:286 says that Allah does not burden a soul beyond its capacity. This means you may grow at your own speed.
The Prophet ﷺ taught that the religion is easy, and that people should do their best and stay steady. Small acts done regularly are loved by Allah. If you make a mistake, ask forgiveness and continue.
Take your time, rest when you need to, and keep your intention clean.
Be kind to your family
Your family may need time to understand your choice. Be calm, honest and respectful. Quran 31:15 teaches kindness to parents even when they follow a different path.
Do not argue about your faith. Good manners, helpfulness and patience will often speak better than words.
Keep your duties to them, help at home, and keep in touch. A gentle attitude may open hearts over time, and the guidance itself is in Allah's hands.
