Scholars agree it is forbidden after the soul is breathed into the child (taught to be 120 days) unless the mother's life is in danger. Before that, they differ: some forbid it unless there is a real need, and others allow it for a valid reason before 40 days. The Quran forbids killing children (17:31, 6:151). وَلَا تَقْتُلُوٓا۟ أَوْلَٰدَكُمْ خَشْيَةَ إِمْلَٰقٍۢ ۖ نَّحْنُ نَرْزُقُهُمْ وَإِيَّاكُمْ ۚ إِنَّ قَتْلَهُمْ كَانَ خِطْـًۭٔا كَبِيرًۭا ﴿٣١﴾
Wala msiwauwe wana wenu kwa kuogopa umasikini. Sisi tunawaruzuku wao na nyinyi. Hakika kuwaua hao ni khatia kubwa.
۞ قُلْ تَعَالَوْا۟ أَتْلُ مَا حَرَّمَ رَبُّكُمْ عَلَيْكُمْ ۖ أَلَّا تُشْرِكُوا۟ بِهِۦ شَيْـًۭٔا ۖ وَبِٱلْوَٰلِدَيْنِ إِحْسَٰنًۭا ۖ وَلَا تَقْتُلُوٓا۟ أَوْلَٰدَكُم مِّنْ إِمْلَٰقٍۢ ۖ نَّحْنُ نَرْزُقُكُمْ وَإِيَّاهُمْ ۖ وَلَا تَقْرَبُوا۟ ٱلْفَوَٰحِشَ مَا ظَهَرَ مِنْهَا وَمَا بَطَنَ ۖ وَلَا تَقْتُلُوا۟ ٱلنَّفْسَ ٱلَّتِى حَرَّمَ ٱللَّهُ إِلَّا بِٱلْحَقِّ ۚ ذَٰلِكُمْ وَصَّىٰكُم بِهِۦ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَعْقِلُونَ ﴿١٥١﴾
Sema: Njooni nikusomeeni aliyo kuharimishieni Mola wenu Mlezi. Nayo ni kuwa, msimshirikishe Yeye na chochote. Na wazazi wenu wafanyieni wema. Wala msiwauwe watoto wenu kwa sababu ya umasikini. Sisi tunakuruzukuni nyinyi na wao. Wala msikaribie mambo machafu, yanayo onekana, na yanayo fichikana. Wala msiuwe nafsi ambayo Mwenyezi Mungu ameharimisha kuiuwa, ila ikiwa kwa haki. Hayo amekuusieni ili myatie akilini.
