Common myths

Do Muslims believe in Adam and Eve?

Short answer

Yes. The Quran tells the story of Adam and his wife (named Hawwa in tradition), who were placed in Paradise and made a mistake by listening to Satan, and then repented and were forgiven. Muslims do not blame Eve alone, or believe in original sin.

The fuller answer

In the Quran, both of them were tempted, and both made the mistake. Adam then received words from his Lord and repented, and God forgave him and chose him. So humans are not born sinful: each person is born in a natural state of faith (fitra) and is responsible for their own deeds.

Adam is also the first prophet in Islam, and all human beings are his children. This is why Islam stresses the equality and unity of the human family. The story also teaches that the door of repentance is open to everyone.

From the Quran

And We said, "O Adam, dwell, you and your wife, in Paradise and eat therefrom in [ease and] abundance from wherever you will. But do not approach this tree, lest you be among the wrongdoers."

Then Adam received from his Lord [some] words, and He accepted his repentance. Indeed, it is He who is the Accepting of repentance, the Merciful.

They said, "Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers."

O mankind, fear your Lord, who created you from one soul and created from it its mate and dispersed from both of them many men and women. And fear Allah, through whom you ask one another, and the wombs. Indeed Allah is ever, over you, an Observer.
