De Koran beledigt christenen niet. Hij vraagt hun respectvol om tot een gemeenschappelijk woord te komen: dat wij niemand aanbidden dan God. Hij zegt dat Jezus, net als Adam, door Gods woord werd geschapen, en dat de Messias, zoon van Maria, slechts een boodschapper was. De Koran zegt: “Zeg niet: drie. Houd op, dat is beter voor jullie.”
Moslims merken op dat Jezus zelf onderwees “De Heer onze God, de Heer is één”, en dat het woord “Drie-eenheid” niet in de Evangeliën voorkomt. Christenen antwoorden dat de Drie-eenheid een mysterie is over één God in drie personen. Moslims respecteren dat zij het hierover oneens zijn, en houden vast aan de eenvoudige eenheid die de Koran leert.
O People of the Scripture, do not commit excess in your religion or say about Allah except the truth. The Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, was but a messenger of Allah and His word which He directed to Mary and a soul [created at a command] from Him. So believe in Allah and His messengers. And do not say, "Three"; desist - it is better for you. Indeed, Allah is but one God. Exalted is He above having a son. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And sufficient is Allah as Disposer of affairs.
They have certainly disbelieved who say, "Allah is the third of three." And there is no god except one God. And if they do not desist from what they are saying, there will surely afflict the disbelievers among them a painful punishment.
Say, "O People of the Scripture, come to a word that is equitable between us and you - that we will not worship except Allah and not associate anything with Him and not take one another as lords instead of Allah." But if they turn away, then say, "Bear witness that we are Muslims [submitting to Him]."
