Is alcohol haram in Islam?

Short answer

Yes. Alcohol (khamr) and every intoxicant are haram. The Quran calls intoxicants an abomination of Satan's handiwork and commands the believers to avoid them (5:90). The Prophet ﷺ said that every intoxicant is khamr and every khamr is forbidden, and that what intoxicates in a large amount is forbidden even in a small amount.

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ إِنَّمَا ٱلْخَمْرُ وَٱلْمَيْسِرُ وَٱلْأَنصَابُ وَٱلْأَزْلَٰمُ رِجْسٌۭ مِّنْ عَمَلِ ٱلشَّيْطَٰنِ فَٱجْتَنِبُوهُ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ ﴿٩٠﴾

اى كسانى كه ايمان آورده‌ايد، شراب و قمار و بتها و گروبندى با تيرها پليدى و كار شيطان است، از آن اجتناب كنيد تا رستگار شويد.

إِنَّمَا يُرِيدُ ٱلشَّيْطَٰنُ أَن يُوقِعَ بَيْنَكُمُ ٱلْعَدَٰوَةَ وَٱلْبَغْضَآءَ فِى ٱلْخَمْرِ وَٱلْمَيْسِرِ وَيَصُدَّكُمْ عَن ذِكْرِ ٱللَّهِ وَعَنِ ٱلصَّلَوٰةِ ۖ فَهَلْ أَنتُم مُّنتَهُونَ ﴿٩١﴾

شيطان مى‌خواهد با شراب و قمار ميان شما كينه و دشمنى افكند و شما را از ياد خدا و نماز باز دارد، آيا بس مى‌كنيد؟

۞ يَسْـَٔلُونَكَ عَنِ ٱلْخَمْرِ وَٱلْمَيْسِرِ ۖ قُلْ فِيهِمَآ إِثْمٌۭ كَبِيرٌۭ وَمَنَٰفِعُ لِلنَّاسِ وَإِثْمُهُمَآ أَكْبَرُ مِن نَّفْعِهِمَا ۗ وَيَسْـَٔلُونَكَ مَاذَا يُنفِقُونَ قُلِ ٱلْعَفْوَ ۗ كَذَٰلِكَ يُبَيِّنُ ٱللَّهُ لَكُمُ ٱلْءَايَٰتِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَفَكَّرُونَ ﴿٢١٩﴾

تو را از شراب و قمار مى‌پرسند. بگو: در آن دو گناهى بزرگ و سودهايى است براى مردم. و گناهشان از سودشان بيشتر است. و از تو مى‌پرسند، چه چيز انفاق كنند؟ بگو: آنچه افزون آيد. خدا آيات را اينچنين براى شما بيان مى‌كند، باشد كه در كار دنيا و آخرت بينديشيد.

Hadith

Sahih Muslim 2003a

Ibn 'Umar reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying:Every intoxicant is Khamr and every intoxicant is forbidden. He who drinks wine in this world and dies while he is addicted to it, not having repented, will not be given a drink in the Hereafter

Arabic text (with chain of narrators)

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الرَّبِيعِ الْعَتَكِيُّ، وَأَبُو كَامِلٍ قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا أَيُّوبُ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏ "‏ كُلُّ مُسْكِرٍ خَمْرٌ وَكُلُّ مُسْكِرٍ حَرَامٌ وَمَنْ شَرِبَ الْخَمْرَ فِي الدُّنْيَا فَمَاتَ وَهُوَ يُدْمِنُهَا لَمْ يَتُبْ لَمْ يَشْرَبْهَا فِي الآخِرَةِ ‏"‏ ‏.‏
