Most contemporary scholars and medical councils hold that smoking is haram, because of its proven harm and the command not to destroy oneself (4:29, 2:195) and that the Prophet ﷺ made lawful only the good things (7:157). Some earlier scholars, before the harm was known, called it disliked (makruh). Today the harm is clear, so avoiding it is the safer and sounder position.
وَأَنفِقُوا۟ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ وَلَا تُلْقُوا۟ بِأَيْدِيكُمْ إِلَى ٱلتَّهْلُكَةِ ۛ وَأَحْسِنُوٓا۟ ۛ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يُحِبُّ ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ ﴿١٩٥﴾
Na toeni katika njia ya Mwenyezi Mungu, wala msijitie kwa mikono yenu katika maangamizo. Na fanyeni wema. Hakika Mwenyezi Mungu huwapenda wafanyao wema.
يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَا تَأْكُلُوٓا۟ أَمْوَٰلَكُم بَيْنَكُم بِٱلْبَٰطِلِ إِلَّآ أَن تَكُونَ تِجَٰرَةً عَن تَرَاضٍۢ مِّنكُمْ ۚ وَلَا تَقْتُلُوٓا۟ أَنفُسَكُمْ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ بِكُمْ رَحِيمًۭا ﴿٢٩﴾
Enyi mlio amini! Msiliane mali yenu kwa dhulma, isipo kuwa iwe biashara kwa kuridhiana wenyewe. Wala msijiuwe. Hakika Mwenyezi Mungu ni Mwenye kuwarehemuni.
ٱلَّذِينَ يَتَّبِعُونَ ٱلرَّسُولَ ٱلنَّبِىَّ ٱلْأُمِّىَّ ٱلَّذِى يَجِدُونَهُۥ مَكْتُوبًا عِندَهُمْ فِى ٱلتَّوْرَىٰةِ وَٱلْإِنجِيلِ يَأْمُرُهُم بِٱلْمَعْرُوفِ وَيَنْهَىٰهُمْ عَنِ ٱلْمُنكَرِ وَيُحِلُّ لَهُمُ ٱلطَّيِّبَٰتِ وَيُحَرِّمُ عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلْخَبَٰٓئِثَ وَيَضَعُ عَنْهُمْ إِصْرَهُمْ وَٱلْأَغْلَٰلَ ٱلَّتِى كَانَتْ عَلَيْهِمْ ۚ فَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ بِهِۦ وَعَزَّرُوهُ وَنَصَرُوهُ وَٱتَّبَعُوا۟ ٱلنُّورَ ٱلَّذِىٓ أُنزِلَ مَعَهُۥٓ ۙ أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْمُفْلِحُونَ ﴿١٥٧﴾
Ambao kwamba wanamfuata huyo Mtume, Nabii, asiye soma wala kuandika, wanaye mkuta kaandikwa kwao katika Taurati na Injili, anaye waamrisha mema na anawakanya maovu, na anawahalalishia vizuri, na ana waharimishia viovu, na anawaondolea mizigo yao na minyororo iliyo kuwa juu yao. Basi wale walio muamini yeye, na wakamhishimu, na wakamsaidia, na wakaifuata nuru iliyo teremshwa pamoja naye - hao ndio wenye kufanikiwa.
