Most contemporary scholars and medical councils hold that smoking is haram, because of its proven harm and the command not to destroy oneself (4:29, 2:195) and that the Prophet ﷺ made lawful only the good things (7:157). Some earlier scholars, before the harm was known, called it disliked (makruh). Today the harm is clear, so avoiding it is the safer and sounder position.
ए ईमानवालों आपस में एक दूसरे का माल नाहक़ न खा जाया करो लेकिन (हॉ) तुम लोगों की बाहमी रज़ामन्दी से तिजारत हो (और उसमें एक दूसरे का माल हो तो मुज़ाएक़ा नहीं) और अपना गला आप घूंट के अपनी जान न दो (क्योंकि) ख़ुदा तो ज़रूर तुम्हारे हाल पर मेहरबान है
(यानि) जो लोग हमारे बनी उल उम्मी पैग़म्बर के क़दम बा क़दम चलते हैं जिस (की बशारत) को अपने हॉ तौरैत और इन्जील में लिखा हुआ पाते है (वह नबी) जो अच्छे काम का हुक्म देता है और बुरे काम से रोकता है और जो पाक व पाकीज़ा चीजे तो उन पर हलाल और नापाक गन्दी चीजे उन पर हराम कर देता है और (सख्त एहकाम का) बोझ जो उनकी गर्दन पर था और वह फन्दे जो उन पर (पड़े हुए) थे उनसे हटा देता है पस (याद रखो कि) जो लोग (नबी मोहम्मद) पर ईमान लाए और उसकी इज्ज़त की और उसकी मदद की और उस नूर (क़ुरान) की पैरवी की जो उसके साथ नाज़िल हुआ है तो यही लोग अपनी दिली मुरादे पाएंगें
